Gary Waller – Alumni of Developers Institute
1. Tell me a story about an interesting experience/ day at the diru.wpenginepowered.com.
Rather than telling an interesting story, I’ll tell you a typical story of a day in the life of a Developer Institute bootcamper. We start at 9:30, ensure coffee is at the ready and you’re awake and alert to absorb new and what seems like simple information. Then comes the what seems like simple exercise to complete. Then the highs and lows of life as a developer. Swearing you have done something exactly how it should be done, it should work… but it doesn’t… WHY NOT!?
Now your fellow students come to the rescue, to attempt to help you find the solution, reassure that you can do it and if all else fails, ask the teacher.
2. How did you end up wanting to learn to code?
A friend of mine back in London had taught himself to code in the evening over the course of a year. He gave my the initial thought to switch career when I first made Aliyah. I then heard about the developer Institute when I nefesh b nefesh came here on their very first Tech Talk/Tour, now a regular fixture.
3. What have you enjoyed about the course?
The best moments of learning to code comes after being stuck on a problem, actually the longer you have been stuck and the more persistent you are get the solution the bigger the feeling of accomplishment. This is often expressed as a small private fist pump under the desk, high five, or a loud “YES!” Echoing across the classroom.
4. What was your most challenging moment during the course and what did it feel like when you got over the hurdle?
Personally I found the weekly projects most challenging, as you are seriously thrown into the deep end. After learning a few new concepts, you are tasked to make a simple social media website, pet store and this last week a hangman game. Reading documentation about how the Flask framework is supposed to work can make the morning session seem like a blink of an eye. Getting something visually working and any stage of the project is a big win.
